you need to have winterboard, then use cydia to look for what you want. Then go to winterboard and enable the SMS tone you downloaded.

Two methods:

Winterboard method
  • Enable the SMS ringtones you've downloaded via Cydia from within Winterboard
  • Then select the SMS ringtone you want from within the iPhone's Settings

SSH method (found elsewhere)
In order to change your SMS tones you will need:

1) a jailbroken iPhone
2) files converted to .aif then renamed to .caf
3) Rename your files to....

sms-received1.caf = Tri-tone
sms-received2.caf = Chime
sms-received3.caf = Glass
sms-received4.caf = Horn
sms-received5.caf = Bell
sms-received6.caf = Electronic

Then place them in /System/Library/Audio/UISounds

You'll probably want to back up the original ringtones before you overwrite them.

I use a great program (cost like 3 or 5 bucks) called ToneFX's through Cydia. Its worth it as you can set custom ringtones/sounds as alerts for any sound. It has step by step instructions on how to make your own and put them on your iPhone!
