Currently, it's in feet. I can't find where to change the units in the Watch app or the Compass app on the iPhone. I long tapped in the Compass app on the iPhone, but nothing happened, it wouldn't let me change the units.

Apparently his: (from Apple support forums)

“The only way I can find, is to set the region on the iPhone Watch app in General/Language & Region to ‘Custom’, then set the region to be an area that uses metric or imperial.
e.g USA for feet, U.K for metres (height anyway).

I have no idea what else this may affect.”

Absolutely bloody mental. Whoever at Apple signed this off as acceptable needs sacking!

Perhaps this gets fixed in a future update. Yes, definite oversight!

I'm guessing you're from or in the U.K.? If yes, curious as to why you want the units in feet? I'm in the US and want it meters to be more fluent in international units, in particular, SI units.

On iphone..... settings...language and region..... measurement system....metric.

This has given me metres on elevation complication on my ultra and compass app on phone

Doesn't work properly for me. If I set the measurement system to metric and tap the outer ring of the Wayfinder watch face, the elevation is indeed shown in meters. If I open the compass app, though, distance (in the inner, orange circle) and elevation (in the orange ring) are shown in feet. This is very annoying and so far I haven't found a way to fix this mix of metrics on my AWU.

I have checked on my watch and the compass app is in metres as well.
I am in UK. Not sure if that makes any difference.

I spent another hour on this last night and finally figured it out. Seems to be yet another bug in IOS 16...

On my iPhone, I had two different languages installed that both use the metrics system with UK being active. It didn't make any difference at all which language I selected, whether I set the measurement system to metric manually on the iPhone or even set up a custom region. The compass would always show metres for elevation on the inner ring of the Wayfinder watch face but feet in the compass app itself including the elevation complication.

Only after I removed the additional language on the iPhone I had installed (even though it wasn't in use on the iPhone or AWU), the compass app started to show meters as well.

So if anyone has the same issue on their watch, make sure that only one single language pack is installed on iPhone, otherwise there'll be a weird mix of units between the watch face, complications and compass app.

Just picked up my new Ultra and noticed the elevation in the Wayfinder complication and the Compass app show in feet despite all my watch/iPhone settings being set to metric/metres. The only way I can change it to metres is by switching my Region to Custom and choosing a European country like France, but if I change back to UK then the elevation switches back to Feet. Am I missing something obvious (per above post I only have one language installed).

On my watch, I set it to “Mirror my iPhone” and on the iPhone I have selected English / UK plus the measurement system to metric. Have you tried rebooting both the watch and phone after changing the settings?

Yeah sorted. It was switching the measurement system from U.K. to Metric that fixed it - I assumed UK would be metric!

Cool, glad you could work it out and I found it confusing as well that the UK measurements aren’t automatically set to metric!

I have spent HOURS on this - it was driving me mad - details I know but.....! The iPhone compass app, the inner ring on the regular adventure watch face and the Watch Compass app all showing different units! All I wanted was Altitude in meters on my watch face like my Garmin....
Anyway by following the above series of changes finally got it to work - you need to change the units on your iPhone to Metric, not jsut UK which wasn't even showing at one time on my iPhone settings, need to Mirror the watch / phone and fiddle aroudn with the whole lot of them as above but eventually it DOES work - persevere.... Thank you to all those above. Phew!

Just bringing this back to life...

Has anyone found a way to have meters in elevation, yet maps still show as miles?!

GAH!!!
