I downloaded an icon pack and want to use a few in a document I am writing. How do I convert them into something other applications (Word or Dreamweaver) can use?

I must be doing something wrong.

The icons don't have any extensions but if I look at them in a folder (using finder) I can see the pictures perfectly. But I can't open them with anything.

I started Preview and went to file... it wouldn't let me open them. They were grayed out so to speak.

could always shift-command-4 it, then open in preview and save as jpeg, most applications handle .png's pretty well.

Yeah, this will work but I really wanted a non-kludge way. The original icons appear to be scaleable and if I could figure out their format it might convert a bit nicer.

in the Finder, File->Get Info on the icon file, and click on the icon shown in the top left of that window so that it grows a blue halo. Then Edit->Copy. If you then go into Preview and pick File->New, your icon should be there to save as you like.

Click on the icon. Press 'Command + i' then copy and paste the icon at the top into what ever you want. Thats how I do it. :)

This kinda works but it only copies a small icon.
