How do I convince iMessage to use an appleID as default for someone+

She has a phone that doesn't receive texts, but she does have an iPod that can. If I select her email address (which is also her appleID) then it sends as an email. If I just use her name, it sends to the phone. I want it to send to iMessage. Ideas?

You need her to start the iMessage thread. At least that's the way it used to work.
