How do I copy old photos from an old iPhoto library to a new one?

I have been having a lot of problems with iPhoto, mostly slowdown issues. I have decided that I want to make a new library. I know how to do this.

However, I understand that iPhoto keeps copies of originals, thumbnails, etc. How can I be sure i'm copying the right photos from the old library? Are they all stored in one folder? I also want to keep all of my events and dates of each photo, will I lose them?
