How do I create my own beats in Garageband?

I figured out how to drag apple loops and more specially the drum loops, but I want to know how to either edit these beats OR make new ones from scratch from within garage band or a third party program. I am using real instruments otherwise, just interested in doing the drums this way. Is this possible? Thank you

if you have the keyboard open you can use the keyboard to do different beats. (or just press the keyboard on the screen)

Yeah, Im looking for more of somethin where you see a measure or two, and you can click individual drum parts in to the measure (ie bass drum on beat one and snare one two) and then this is dropped into the garabe band, rather than hitting keys live
