A relative of mine has a Bing-redirect infection in both Safari and Firefox, on his Mac running Mojave; his Google searches in the address bar are redirected as Bing searches.

In looking at how to eliminate this without destroying Safari's contents, I've seen recommendations on installing applications thats scan macOS for malicious processes (ex. CleanMyMac X); however, as a long-time Mac user, I avoid this stuff like the plague, because it honestly sounds to me like malware in and of itself. (I admit, though, that I have never had to deal with this on any of Macs, and so I am not necessarily the authority on the legitimacy of cleaners for macOS.)

Might there be a better way of dealing with this, or is this a full-blown malware infection whose removal requires something akin to the aforementioned software?

Your inclination to avoid CleanMyMac is most likely correct. But you should evaluate each app on its own merits or lack thereof.
Malwarebytes for Mac has a very solid and widespread reputation. It is not Malware, but it does a great job of finding that kind of thing. Better yet you can use the free version indefinitely, or buy the paid version if you need the extra functions it offers. It is not nagware either, the free version runs OK at all times. I am not affilited with that company, just a Happy user! It may be possible to deal with that Bing search redirect in some other way, but I would download Malwarebytes and try it first.

Thank you, both, for your answers! I'll see if the user in question feels comfortable with installing either applications.
