Hi,

I recently got an Apple TV 4K 32gb. I am having issues playing movies purchased from ITunes. They “Freeze” and won’t play.

I cannot find a way to delete movies and re - download them. There is an option to delete apps but not movies.

how do you force a movie to restart? The ‘play from the beginning’ option does nothing. The movie is still frozen (paused).

I seem to be able to play tv shows without issue.

You can’t delete movies from an ATV as they’re not stored on an ATV.
You could try going to Settings, Apps, iTunes Movies and Tv Shows and turn off Quick Start and see if that resolves it.
Turning quick start off stores a temporary buffer during playback but you don’t get 4K.
If that does resolve it then perhaps you don’t have enough bandwidth to stream 4K, you need a minimum of 25mbps to stream 4K via ATV4K.

That’s very helpful - thank you. I have done a full reset which seems to have fixed the issue, but it may just be a temp fix.

just a suggestion in the future:
you could watch a movie/video from a MacBook like i do, just go to the computer option.
that could be a better format and more power than watching through the apple tv cloud.

Will an iTunes movie play in 4k DV on the Apple TV 4k from any MacBook? I only have a late 2013 13" Pro.

Yes, if it is in iTunes-compatible format. But AFAIK you can not download your iTunes purchases in 4K to your MacBook. So you must source them elsewhere. Also, bear in mind, that streaming DV uses a different flavor, so anything that came off of UHD bluray in Dolby Vision, still does not play back in DV on aTV. You'd need a different media player too.

I know can't download 4k versions of my iTunes movies.

I was wondering if you can stream a movie from Apple's iTunes store in 4k DV from a MacBook to an Apple TV 4k box.

I researched media players that will play UHD rips in DV and found that, unless the UHD rip is recoded to remove HD audio and single-layer DV, HDR is the only option. I have a shield that will play rips in HDR which is fine for me.

That is an interesting call - it seems I am presented with 4K rendering now on my iMac. Will try to AirPlay it to aTV 4K later. But what is the point of doing that?
I believe someone even claimed that now with AirPlay 2, your Mac will just throw a pointer to aTV and it will be streaming from iTunes Store (or aTV+) on its own.

I use my Sony UHD-blu-ray player for that purpose and I can keep both Dolby Vision and HD audio (Atmos).
Though the latest news on makeMKV forum did not help me in any way to get the flattened (into single video stream) DV to play.

I asked because someone mentioned using their MacBook since the OP was experiencing freezing during playback.

Your UHD player supports DV from UHD rips? That would be awesome.

I have a nas so DV playback would be nice without having to use lossy audio.

Explain what you mean in regards to the bolded text above. Is this an iTunes purchased 4K movie (i.e. Lord of the Rings)?

As you may already know, purchased 4K content can only be streamed, not downloaded. If you want a 4K copy of a movie on your hard drive, you must rip it from another source (i.e. DVD).

Why would you stream a movie from your laptop to your AppleTV 4K when you can just stream it directly to the AppleTV? Are your referring to iTunes Store purchased content or your own personal content (i.e. ripped DVDs)?

You wouldn't use iTunes to stream your content to AppleTV in that case, you would use Homesharing or a 3rd party media server app.

I have no interest in streaming purchased iTunes content from a MacBook to an Apple TV.

I only asked about streaming from a MacBook because of this post:

Not sure I understand. If you are playing a UHD rip via the Plex or Infuse Apple TV players they will play in HDR with the appropriate audio without any re-encoding. Are you saying that your TV does't support HDR?

4K UHD playback from an appropriate NAS, on a suitable network, using the appropriate software works great. Just rip them via MakeMKV using a player with the modified firmware. You can do it yourself or purchase one - discussed on the MakeMKV website.

I do not use an Apple TV to play UHD rips. I either use my Windows HTPC or nVidia Shield for HDR and HD audio.

I use two UHD friendly drives with DVDFab.

Yes. Since tsMuxeR nightly became available and the correct DV tagging was implemented, now my player plays them just as if from optical disc. Because Sony player follows the standards book to the letter, I would assume most players will play them. Of course, all things that are handled via BD-J and playlists and CLIPINF files are lost.

That's cool. I know full menu navigation isn't possible but I have the disc if I want to watch extras, etc.
