How do I disable the ".trash" files in my iPod? (they take a lot of space)

I use my iPod for backing my documents, but every time I erase these documents from my iPod (let's say I erase my photos -2GB-), I never get the space I want for the files deleted.
Those 2GB are still occupied by the ."trash" files created.

And the worst part is that for me being able to delete them I have to open Disk Utility and erase the HD.

It happens the same with my USB flash memory, I always need to use Disk Utility to free space in it.

Am I missing something here? There should be a way around this problem.

When the external device is attached just empty the trash, It should give you back the free space. Macs have .trashes for each device seperately but still show them in the same Trash in the dock.
