My Finder window shows however many folder/files (combined) are in the currently selected folder. It runs along the bottom of the Finder window along with the remaining HD space.

Doesn't help if you want to know how many are in more than selection.

It does exist. Click on Finder, now in the menu-bar click view, then click Show View Options, then tick the box "Show Item Info".
This won't work if a folder is selected, so, to be clear, click anywhere on your Desktop that's empty, then follow the above directions.

Shortcut: click on Desktop, then ⌘-J.

Edit: No, I was wrong: you need to be in icon view, not it column or list view, for this to work, but it'll work anywhere. In whatever Finder window you're using, be sure to click on the icon view (or hit ⌘-1).

It doesn't always exist there...

If I follow these instructions with a Finder window open in 10.4.4, I only get the options for Text Size, Show Icons and Show Preview colum

If I click on the Desktop and leave it open, I get the remaining options.

Not entirely sure that Gary wants to see them all the time though. I had the impression he just wanted a way to see the quantities occasionally.

Of course, this still doesn't answer the OP's question: he wants to know the number of files and folders, presumably not the total number but the number of each.

Dont have a Finder window open, just click on the desktop then proceed to follow my directions.

As I mentioned above, this seems to work in any Finder window, as long as you're in Icon View (⌘-1).

Oh woops, here is the solution.

Open Finder, hit the button next to the different view options, the one that has the tool on it. Click that and then click Show View Options. Then click show item info.

Again, this only works in Icon view.

I'm well aware of what to do. I was just pointing out that it was perfectly possible for the original poster to say those options didn't exist if he'd set up his default click on the Finder to bring up a new Finder window

I got it working, now. It is somewhat helpful that it shows # of folders + files, but I would like a separate number for both.

How do I show the number of files and folders (including in all subdirectories) of a certain folder, though?
