I just bought a late 11' mbp it didn't come with any recovery disk and I'm a new mac user just curious... if i wanted to clean up my hdd (format) then install lion... i press command+R on restart go into utilities then 'erase' the drive with the space 320GB, then go back to install lion?

It should have a Recovery Disk - its not like a physical disk though. If thats what you thought you should be able to do this:

  1. Restart Your Mac, on boot-up hold down the Alt-Option Key
  2. A menu should appear - select Recovery HD
  3. Let it boot to the Recovery Disk
  4. Select "Reinstall Mac OS X Lion"

I would make sure you don't have any files that you need before you do this. You can use Carbon Copy Cloner or Time Machine to create a backup if you do.
