How do I get external monitors to recognize portrait mode?

I have 3 Dell U2412M's connected to a retina MBP.....there is no setting in the monitor's menus and allow for any change and they dont do it automatically...any ideas?

There should be an orientation option under system pref > displays. I usually use 270.
