This happens to me all the time…my AW has been sitting on the charger (sometimes for an hour or so) but the minute I take it off and put it on my wrist I get a message that there is a software update which will try and install later tonight. Right now I’m running the public beta with automatic updates on. Why doesn’t the software recognize that my AW is charging and notify me that there is a software update available for install?

I think communication between watch and phone is very limited when the watch is on the charger, I think limited to battery %.
I have 2 watches paired and wear the watch 24x7 so I never really run into this situation.

Maybe put a feature request into Apple?

Interesting. Though if auto updates are turned on couldn’t AW update the software when the watch is on the charger without any manual intervention?

Doesn't Apple require that you formally accept their terms and conditions by entering your security pin (on the watch, or the watch app on the paired iPhone), before proceeding with installing a new update? Not sure why you wouldn't still be bound by the license terms and conditions that you accepted when the device was new, but I suppose Apple lawyers have their reasons.

The other reason that comes to mind is to make sure that the watch doesn't auto-upgrade to a WatchOS version that is incompatible with the iOS version on the paired iPhone.

I don't think that's possible. The paired iPhone has to update to the newer iOS version before the corresponding watchOS update becomes available for the paired watch.

I had an older iPhone that could no longer update to the latest iOS, and while my watch was paired with that phone, it never updated or offered to update watchOS to newer versions.

Hmm…I don’t think I’ve had to put my pin in for a while now.

I’m on the public betas so maybe it’s a beta bug. I would think once iOS updates and makes the watchOS update available it should send you a notification that it’s available for install.
