how do I get Itunes to stop duplicating songs?

I have songs that are ripped in Apple Lossless in my Library, but I want to create new AAC songs from the Apple Lossless for my Ipod.

How do I get Itunes to stop sending the new AAC songs into the same Library of the Apple Lossless? They also appear to be going into the same folder/location where the Apple Lossless files are.
