How do I get rid of the telephone symbol on my taskbar?

okay, I have no idea how I did this but all of the sudden I have this icon that looks like a telephone on my taskbar and I have no idea how it got there.

any clues as to why its there? also, how do I get rid of it?

Can you show a screencap? Also, have you checked out Activity Monitor to see what's running?

Hold down the command key and drag it off.

It sounds like it's the menu item for your internal modem.

thats the modem icon which you can disable in Network preferences. but the easier way is to just press command and click on it then drag it off!
