How do I import my Gmail contacts into Address Book? I tried exporting to both formats that Gmail supports and importing into Address Book, but Address Book is not able to import either of them.

It will as a text file. Export it both forms and then import as a text file. I forget which one worked, I think it was the Outlook one. Either way, you only have 2 shots at it.

I tried the Outlook one. It did not work. I already said that I tried both.

Does it give you anything? Sorry, it worked just fine for me. Well, not perfect, I had to edit a few things that I chose to import, nothing big though.

Here is what I get:

Text file import failure
The file you selected does not appear to be a valid comma separated values (csv) file nor a valid tab delimited file, please choose another file.

Open the .csv file in OO or NeoOffice, or whatever you use. Show me a line or two of it, so I can see the formatting.

I just tried it and it worked fine. I saved it as an Outlook CSV file, downloaded it to my desktop & imported it through a text file to the address book. Note, however, that on import you need to select which fields to import since the default is "do not import". Good luck.

I've isolated the problem - it is multi-line fields that cause the problem.

Some years later this task is quick & easy

Just did this myself, took around 15 seconds in total.
Open gmail, contacts, more options (above contacts), export, vcard format (the same as how I uploaded contacts from my other mac), export.
The next thing I knew, my macbook wanted to know if I wanted to import the vcard to address book.
Actually the whole thing may have taken 10 seconds.
Easy peasy.

I use this method when helping friends and family, works every time.

The only problem I have is that Bernie can do it in 10, it takes me 11 seconds.. ha..ha..ha..ha..
