How do i install OS on external hard drive?

I have a notebook drive in an enclosure and want to know whether I can install the os onto the drive by specifying the external hard drive as the target disk. Then I plan to take out the notebook drive and put it in the notebook. Just wondering whether this works or not.

Absolutely, as long as it's firewire (though that may have changed with the MacTels). Just boot from the Installer DVD and choose the external.
