I 3.1.2 jailbroken with Blackrain. So do I restore my iPhone to 3.1.3 and then jailbreak using Spirit? What are the instructions

Back up your phone in iTunes and then exit iTunes
Download Spirit from spiritjb.com
Run Spirit with your phone still tethered to your computer and push the only freakin button that says: Jailbrake! :D

Restore to a clean 3.1.3 if you don't care about unlock then use the spirit jailbreak.

Untethered used to be depending on the Bootrom of your iPhone the old bootrom was 392.3 which was an untethered jb the new bootrom apple released was 392.3.2 which was a tethered jailbreak in blackra1n. All phones are untethered with spirit.

It's not that reliable, it's not needed, and it can easily be blocked by Apple (don't ask me for the details on this one). I mean, how hard is it to use Redsn0w? Or PwnageTool?

What? That is the first I have ever heard of that. I have used spirit on 4 separate 3G iphones and all worked flawlessly

Care to point me to these documented issues?

Its well known that the Dev Teams JB's are more solid and reliable than blackrain or Spirit JB since its just a userland exploit.
In the future an itunes update could possibly detect and patch the exploit used by spirit.
Unless you're stuck on a 3GS with 3.1.3 and no way to downgrade then go with the only option that you have and thats Spirit.
If you can use pwnagetool or Redsnow instead I'd suggest going with that.

I have jailbroke 9 3gs and 17 3g iPhones so far with spirit and no problems. with pwnage tool you have to use a mac and I have had more problems with redsnow and quite honestly I wont use it again. Im not saying it is bad its just not good to me!! lol.

always backup your iPhone before you jailbreak but there is no need to do a clean install or update before you do it. unless you are currently having problems that may be software related.

and another thing I will never update with iTunes again. I will sync but thats as far as it goes.

I hear you.
I have done tons of them also using custom IPSW's with pwnage, blackrain, redsnow, spirit you name it.
Pwnage is also alot easier either downloading a custom IPSW from the internet or using a friends mac for a few minutes to build one.
Simple and easy is not always the best way though.
I had problems with losing all camera roll pics to springboard icons dissapearing after running spirit etc....
Not such a bad thing and you should always back up your phone before attempting anything but there is more solid options out.
To each his own I guess.
