How do I know my new iphone has been unlocked or not

Dear all,
I got a new Iphone bought by my wife's boss when he was in Hongkong, he said that it's the apple unlock version, but is there any way to find out whether it's really the apple unlock or unlocked in other way (pwnage?). Btw I have 3g phone. I want to upgrade to the new firmware, but just want to make sure. Thanks, and please don't flame me, if my questions is too stupid. thanks

iPhone 3Gs can be legally bought unlocked in Hong Kong through Apple there. But it is limited to ATT here.
 
I think the place of purchase is a pretty good indication.

Thanks all, what I mean is whether it's been previously unlock by pwnage or not. It can definetly receive my sim card (Indonesian), so I know it's an unlock one. Thanks for the answer now I can try to upgrade the firmware

Yes, now I know from my friend that if you purchase an iPhone from Hong Kong Apple Store, you could pretty much go with any GSM carrier.
 
So your question is if the iphone 3g are unlock by jailbreak/yellowsn0w or it is factory unlock from apple.

In order for yellowsn0w unlock, you need to have
iphone 3g firmware2.2 with baseband 02.28.00
jailbreak with either cydia or installer install

If you can use any sim card other than AT&T, and you phone is not jailbreak, than it is factory unlock
 
so cbr900rr what you mean is if my phone is unlocked by pwnage tools, it should have installer or cydia icon on the screen? Just want to make sure
