On Snow Leopard you did a 4 finger swipe and it showed all the apps running on a horizontal format... from there could click on Command Q and it would close those apps. Is there a way that I could close apps quickly or do I have to somewhat guess the apps that are running.

Command + TAB

It worked in Snow Leopard and that's what I used to quickly switch between apps. Still works in Lion. Press it multiple times to go though the apps.

How to find out what Apps are running:
Command+Tab
Mission Control
Dock Indicators
Activity Monitor
etc... etc...
