how do I make contact's photo full size when they call?

I was under the impression when you assign the photo to a contact directly from your iphone, they appear full size when that person calls. It's not working for me. However, when I take a picture using my iphone and then assign that picture to a contact, it works. But on my wife's iphone she doesn't have to take the picture using her iphone to get it to work...she just assigns any picture she wants using the iphone whether it was taken by the iphone or not. What gives?
