I have a Quicktime movie that is simply not loud enough, even when the Mac's and Quicktime's volume is set to highest and even when I set the volume in the movie audio settings to +6db.

Is there a way simply to make the audio track louder?

Am I overlooking something or why is this so surprisingly difficult?

Have you tried iMovie yet? IIRC you can change the volume in there.

Just place your ear directly on the source of the sound, and - viola! - it'll sound louder than before, when your ear was further away.

lol I was thinking of something along the same lines.

On a more serious note as arjen92 said, in VLC you ca increase the sound level up to 200%.

I tried iMovie. It was a boring experience. It imported the movie and then proceeded to create "thumbnails" for 15 minutes.

It couldn't affect the volume significantly, i.e. not more than the settings in Quicktime Player.
