Hi all, I have not done this type of thing for a long time, my Mom needs a new phone (she has an iPhone 5) so she wants my XS Max, and I'll get a new iPhone. In past years I have done this type of migration by just popping the SIM card and putting it into the new phone, I think the iPhone 5 and XS Max both take a Nano SIM card so I can just do the same thing, correct? Any other issues I need to worry about?

Thanks for your help!

Yes, for the rest I suggest an iTunes backup of the 5 and a restore on the XS max

While your plan "could" work, that is a HUGE jump 5 to Xs!
If it was my Mom, she would get the current Xs or a new SIM (free from her carrier) and fresh iOS install, loading her apps and settings from new (no backup restore).

Way too much technology has changed between those phones.

@pawtracks that's a possibility, thanks for suggesting it to get me to think. Actually in her case she has just about 0 optional apps, small list of contacts, not sure she really has any other data!
[doublepost=1568252586][/doublepost]@pawtracks if I get a new SIM, how do I get that tied to her current phone number?

The other two things I do on old phone is remove from my iCloud and a full reset, giving it a fresh OS install.
This gives my Mom the full OOBE (Out of box experience), new setup wizard.

Settings > click on your name (Apple ID, iCloud, etc...) > Sign out
and
Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings

Depending on the timing of you giving your Xs to your Mom, iOS 13 comes out 9/19, and iOS 13.1 is planned for 9/30.

@pawtracks I do the same, I go through the list of things to do when you are selling the phone to get it completely reset, then install fresh. We might hold the phone and give it to her as a Christmas present, in which case I can keep it updated during the meantime. Thanks for your tips!
