How do I minimise apps to the right hand side of the dock?

I used to have apps on the right hand side of the separator next to the trash. Such as apps that arnt in the left side of the dock will minimise to the right side next to the trash. My Mac air has stopped doing this. How can I turn that feature back on? Thanks

apps NEVER go on the right side of the separator (and never have); only open windows from apps go on the right (or docs, images etc). apps alway minimize to the left.

I have docs open with preview and thats on the left, I haven't noticed anything been on the right for a while except trash.

preview's icon should be on the left, but what happens if you minimize a particular doc?

If I open a pdf from finder then it opens the preview app. Then if you minise the pdf then it just minimises to the preview icon on the left.

ah. go to system preferences>dock> and uncheck: Minimize windows into application icon....
