Excuse my ignorance (once again!)

But could someone kindly explain where I store apps that appear on the homepage!
I have recently installed a western digital passport external drive. And the passport logo is showing on the top right hand corner of my screen. I have tried dragging it to the applications folder in my finder but it is still there.
It also shows a small black curved arrow when I try and move it!
I ended up with quite a few of the same logo on my screen. So sent them all to my trash apart from original. Hope I haven't done anything wrong!!

An external HDD is not an application. You can disable showing external disks on the Desktop via Finder > Preferences > General > Show these items on the Desktop

Icons with a small arrow are aliases.

Applications normally go into the Applications folder, if it is a an application.

OMG! Thank you so much. It has been driving me bonkers trying to hide it!!

As for the aliases. So there is no need to worry about trashing the ones I created. As long as I have original!!?!

Get rid of the aliases, it won't affect the original file.
