How do I open a console/switch to text mode to install a program.

Hi.

I am a 2 days old Mac user
My first program that I need to install needs text-mode (it cannot be installed if the graphic interface is running). At least this is what its documentation says.

My question is how to switch to text mode to run the SU command?

Finder/applications/utilities

Both Console and Terminal are in there.
