I have years of various emails from ~6 IMAP accounts. Inside the relevant folders inside ~/Library, I have ~12GB of data from the accounts (none of it is spam).

Searching emails is extremely difficult and I can rarely find what I want. Is there anything I can do to speed up search?

Also, is the best way to archive older messages using tarballs, or is there another method? Which folders inside ~/Library/Mail do I need to archive? How can I archive, say by the year? Is there a way to easily organize mail by each year, so I can easily backup say PERONSAL-2008.tar.gz, PERSONAL-2007.tar.gz, etc?
