How do I permanently reduce the size of the "new message" window?

Usually, when I click the compose message button the new message window is much smaller than the full size window...for some reason, now when I compose a new message it appears in full screen, no matter how many times I manually resize it. How do I make it so it's always a smaller window when I compose a message?

Mail does the same thing for me. I never noticed it so I guess its been okay for me. New message, reply, forward fills the screen although its not a "full screen".

Try holding the Option key down while clicking the green window resize widget in the upper left of the window, then resize the window. It should remember that size forever until you manually resize a window again.
