How do I purchase Applecare for a used iMac?

I want to buy a slightly used iMac on eBay, but I have a question about Applecare...

If I purchase a used iMac (one that's less than one year old), how do I get the Applecare extended warranty? Do I need to obtain the original receipt from the original owner? Please help!

having the original receipt is by far the most useful thing you can have. If you can't get it, then you'll have to rely on whatever information Apple has on record for that serial number. If it was originally bought direct from apple then there's a good chance they'll have a pretty accurate date of sale recorded, but if it came from a reseller, then maybe/maybe not.

are you sure that it is less than one year old for sure? to be sure, check the serial number with the apple website if you can

if it was not purchased from Apple, they can still look up information on it, but may go on production date if they cannot determine sales date
