How do i put my video in widescreen on imovie?

I don't know how to make videos in widescreen using iMovie. I can go on letterbox but i think that might just add a black bar at the bottom and the top which makes it look widescreen but shows it really isn't when it appears in youtube's player as a square video with black bars at the top and bottom.

when you create a project you usually get a window to say 16:9 aspect ratio...
16:9 is widescreen
