How do I receive tweets as notifications?

I set up my Twitter account with ML notifications so the little tweet thing is in the notification center. However I don't actually receive tweet notifications from other people which is my primary use for it. Seems pretty useless to me if it can't carry out this function...Do I need a 3rd party app to get tweets on my desktop?

I think it only notifies you when you are mentioned or added etc. Same as the iphone.
