27" iMac desktop. I booted into safe mode to check something. When I returned my desktop has been reorganized. Something new to me is that it took documents and stacked them up by timeline. So I have some stuff stacked by 2020, 2021, 2022. OK, I can undo all that but I want stuff back where I had it on the desktop and I'd rather not spend the time manually doing it. And because I don't know what caused this to happen I can't figure out how to undo it. I don't want it to keep happening to me. I looked under settings desktop and appearance but nothing jumped out at me. What is the secret?

Maybe you unknowingly hit the "Use Stacks" button (and those stacks have been organized by date, etc)
Right click on your Desktop, then uncheck "Use Stacks"
Might return to your former positions.

Long shot....right click on an empty spot on the Desktop and "clean up by"

That was it. Don't know how I could toggle that but I must have. Put everything back like I had it. Thanks!!!
