How do I rip a portion of an AVI file?

I use Cinematize 2 Pro to rip portions of DVDs... is there something like it that can rip portions of AVI files? I can't find anything but if I have a choice, I want a live screen (so I can see what I am ripping) and a start and stop time.

You can do it with MPEG Streamclip. You can set the In and Out via the Edit menu and then export only the portion you want. It also shows you a preview of what it is exporting.
