I’m having a issue with this iPhone recovery program I’m using that I just bought. Initially I downloaded the program directly to my MacBook Air that has about 60GB of storage left. When I download the programs by default it goes to applications folder. I run the program and it starts the scan. Around 25% completed it stops the scan and says that my computer doesn’t have enough storage to handle the backup the iPhone recovery needs to do the scan. So I was instructed by the iPhone recovery company to delete the program from my MacBook HD and download it again and save it to my external HD where I have tons available space, so that when it runs the scan the backup of the iPhone will go to the external HD. But I can’t seem to figure how to save the program directly to my external drive. When I click “download” program it goes straight to my applications folder instead. My goal is to save the iPhone recovery program to my external HD, so that when I click on it will load from the external HD and save the backup to the external HD where there is tons of space.

Most programs have an installer that require you to select where the program is installed - with Applications being the default - and you'd have to enter your password to allow it to install to the selected location so you could always stop the install process at that point and reverse back to nominate where it is being installed...

That aside, if it truly is installing in Applications without any authorisation, then it may well be your Safari Preferences. Click on the General tab and from the 'File download location:...' select the external drive that you want to install it onto. You can always change it back to the default when it is successfully installed.

Why not just open the Applications folder, then "drag and drop" the program to the external drive?

Sometimes... it's that simple.
