how do I set external drive for iMovie?

as a matter of preference, when I import movies into iMovie, I'd like the videos to load to one of my external drives and stay there, NOT the system drive (due to space issues). can this be done? when in iMovie, there's no Preferences option to set this up. am I missing something?
