I use a VPN but would like to be able to change my ip address manually through socks proxies.

I've looked it up on google and followed the directions. I went to Network>Proxies and checked SOCKS proxy and put in the IP address and port of various socks proxies I found on hidemyass that had all green bars. I've even tried HTTP and HTTPS proxies instead but those are slow and I've read that they still can leak your ip address and may not apply over UDP connections (correct me if I'm wrong).

The same method works on my friend's laptop that runs on Snow Leopard. I'm at a loss. What other method might work? Is there possibly some issue with my laptop that might be preventing proxies from working?
