Tiger or leopard? Pop3 or imap? Have yo enabled settings in your gmail account?

The basic gist of it is this:

Pick pop3 (non-synchronizing) or imap (synchronizing)
Enable pop3 or imap in gmail settings
Mail should automatically detect server settings, so just set the name, pw, and pop/imap

everytime i go to mail this wondow comes up with the following fields
Full name:
Email address:
Incomming mail server:
account type: pop
User name:
Password:
Outgoing mail server(smtp):

what do i put in thoes fields for a gmail account I have enabled pop and now I dont know what to do :( help

I have Ibook g4 if that makes a diffrance

Perhaps This will help.

No that won't help, actually I have had many issues with my Googlemail account on Mail 3.0. The only possible way I've found to have reliable e-mail is to have the SMTP address as smtp@live.com, with the Default (25, 465, 587) ports selected, Using SSL and having the authentication as my Hotmail account details. Basically it looks like this-->

My e-mail address and password for Hotmail go in the authentication box.
Then you use those SMTP Settings with your Googlemail account and all shall be well :)
