go to sys prefs and turn off time machine

however you can use it for time machine and as more space. thats what i do

yeah but everytime it says there is no room left on this disk, even when im just running itunes, so i guess my question is how do i get my mac to recognize that i can save more stuff there

If you just want to use as extra storage and NOT as Time Machine backups also
1) Make sure you have your External Hard Drive plugged in.
2) Go to System Preferences > Time Machine > Turn Off
3) Open Disk Utility
4) Click on the External Hard Drive
5) Go to Erase Tab
6) Format the External Hard drive as Mac OS Journaled (not case sensitive)

If adding a partition
7) Go to the Partition Tab
8) Add a partition by clicking on the plus button (lower left) and drag slider to size
9) Click Apply
* You'll now have what looks like two seperate hard drives. Go into System Preferences > Time Machine and choose which hard drive (actually a partition) you want it to store the Time Machine backups on.

+If you want to have both Time Machine and your own storage area you must partition the hard drive first!
