How do I sync without copying apps to my HDD

Is it still necessary to for iTunes to copy all my apps to my PC? All these apps are taking up all my space on my hard drive.. and since iTunes is installed on main drive.. the drive is over 90% full...

Is there a way to sync without having iTunes copying the app onto my harddrive? I don't get why it does that in the first place.. when I have a copy of the app on my iDevice... and if I happen to delete the app.. I can always download it again.

Deleting previous backups will free-up alot of space.

Thanks for the tip, but where are the backups located?

However, I would still like to know if I can get rid of the apps... I just got an iPad.. and these HD apps are taking up way too much space... I'm just wondering how other people with iPads are dealing with this... besides getting a new harddrive of course.
