How do I take a low resolution picture with iPhone 6?

Hi. Can someone please walk me through the steps to take small-file pictures of some black and white documents? My pics are coming out way too large - they should be a few KB each and instead are at least 2 MB each. I obviously need them to be legible.

Another question if the above is not possible - How do I greatly reduce the size of my 131 MB pdf file which is now on my desktop - iMac, macOS Monterey v. 12.0.1. I don't have Adobe Acrobat - is there another way?
