I just bought a refurbished iPod Touch 3G. It has the original firmware on it (3.1.3) and has never been updated, but it has been synced. I would like to update the firmware to 4.3.5. I downloaded the correct firmware level (iPod3,1_4.3.5_8L1_Restore.ipsw), did the Alt-Update, selected the firmware file and got the "This device isn't eligible for the requested build" message. Same story with Alt-Restore. I tried 4.2.1 also with the same result.

From what I can tell, Apple doesn't let you update to anything less than the latest version. Does anybody know how to get this done? I don't want to jailbreak it, I just want to get 4.3.5 on there with full iTunes support and sail off into the sunset.

Any ideas?

You can only go to a firmware that you have your SHSH blobs for. Use TinyUmbrella (Google it) to find out which firmware versions you have your blobs for.
