I redeemed Tron Legacy in HD with a digital code from a blu-ray back in 2015 at Movies Anywhere, which is connected to my Apple account. So my Apple TV library shows I own the movie in HD, but it's available in 4k now. The Apple TV store page for Tron Legacy only shows the 4k version available, and there is a play button, which suggests I own it, no option to purchase it. However, when I play the movie it does not look like its streaming the 4k version. So then I attempted to "hide" my HD version from my movie library so I could click to purchase the 4k version. But when I do that its says I already own the movie. In the past I have simply gifted the 4k movie to myself and this has worked. Now it seems Apple removed the option to gift content. Does anyone know am I supposed to upgrade Tron Legacy to 4k now?

If there is one try redeeming another HD iTunes code directly to your Apple account and it’ll upgrade to 4K.
You could try redeeming a 4K code into Movies Anywhere which should do the same. Or ask Movies Anywhere to remove the movie so it severs the link so you can then make the purchase.
Not sure if this is still a thing but at one time Vudu had the option to purchase the 4K option if you already owned the HD so not sure if Fandango does the same or not.

I found a Tron: Legacy iTunes code to buy. Waiting for the seller to reply. Hope this works. I'll report back.

Some studios will not automatically provide a 4k upgrade to iTunes/AppleTV HD versions if the code was redeemed at Movies Anywhere. I think Disney is one of these studios. If I remember correctly, I had some Disney marvel movies that I redeemed in HD at Movies Anywhere years ago that were not upgraded to 4k in iTunes. I had to buy the movie again in 4k.

I'm concerned that if Movies Anywhere removes the movie, that it will still show up in my Apple TV library. I noticed in the past when I have disconnected retailers from movies anywhere, the movies still show and are playable.

Correct, if you redeem a HD code in Movies Anywhere you’ll only get HD with no 4K upgrades, however redeem a 4K code in Movies Anywhere and you’ll get 4K.

It should have upgraded. Ours did. Movies Anywhere may be the reason. Just bought the 4K disc, but the digital copy we had from BD had already been converted.
