I currently have a wonderful Mac Pro 2.66GHZ quad core (4,1) and would like to see if upgrading to faster processors is possible. If the answer is yes, what are starting prices and the difficulty in installation?

Thanks!

Yes. See posts 1, 3 and 8 here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1333421/ . Prices will very depending on what processor model you want to use and where you buy them. CPUWorld has the upgrade path: http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Xeon/index.html . Check, e.g., Eoptionsonline, Superbiiz, Provantage, Newegg, Amazon and Ebay for best, current price. Since these processors will be no longer released by Intel at this year's end - act fast if you want new ones.
