I have an iPhone 4 GSM running iOS 5.0.1 JB which was done thru redsn0w. With the new untether out for 5.1.1, I want to upgrade. I have seen in some places that I can just update the iOS version via iTunes and it will work and stay jailbroken. Other places say that I have to restore and rejailbreak. Which is true? And what software should I use, like redsn0w or absinthe?

Use Absinthe.

Plug into iTunes
Right click iDevice, click Backup
Now do a factory restore and update to 5.1.1
After it's done installing 5.1.1, you should restore from backup
Then jailbreak
Done.

When doing this, is there anything that has to be done with the base band?

I have also seen threads about people being stuck in recovery mode after restoring.

Yeah sure. My baseband is 04.11.08. I generally have a lot of knowledge on jailbreaking, but I have never had to upgrade, and have received a lot of confusing information about how to do it. Thanks for the help

Should I back up from restore before re-doing JB?

You didn't specify that you needed to preserve the baseband to unlock afterwards. I would assume so, yes.

What do you mean backup from restore? Do you mean restore from backup?

I only asked about it because I didn't know if it played a role with anything. I do not rely on it. Do I have to do anything with it?

Are you using a factory unlocked iPhone? If so, you dont need to do anything with the baseband.

If you're on AT&T and don't plan on using a carrier besides AT&T for the duration of your contract with AT&T, then don't worry about updating your baseband now.

Can you backup via iCloud and restore from iCloud after you have updated and JB 5.1.1? I want to set up iPhone as new once I upgrade to 5.1.1 and only really want to be able to restore my messagers/contacts and notes not bothered with games saves etc...

Thread starter's baseband is irrelevant.
There is no software or hardware unlock for his baseband and none is expected.
When he updates, his baseband will be 4.12.xx
There is no software or hardware unlock for that baseband either and none is expected.

Restore to 5.1.1, choose set up as new.
Jailbreak it with Absinthe 2.0.4
Sync back your stuff
