How do I use an iPhone 3G as a Touch

Hi, first, let me say I'm a complete noob to iPhone/Touch.

My friend has upgraded to 3Gs and I would like to use his old 3G model as a Touch mainly for Remote app, and sometimes for web browsing/email and iPod functionality.

I am a Verizon customer and I don't have a sim card to use (perhaps I could borrow one temporarily if need be).

What do I need to do to make it work? Does all this stuff about unbricking, activating, unlocking, and jailbreaking have any relevance to my situation?

Jailbreak/unlock/hacktivate with redsn0w

You just take the sim card out. Voila! iPhone>Touch.

But you have to hacktivate it after you upgrade the OS, at least that's the experience I had with turning my original iPhone into an iPod Touch. not sure if it's different for a 3G.

iphone.aggie, I love you man, but it would be best if he became familiar with the hacktivating, because he will have to do it in the future, like the above poster said, for incremental software updates
