how do i use F14, F15, F16 keys?

this may be a dumb questiong but how do i get them to work?

ive tried to make shortcuts to like dashoard, docionary, expose, etc . . . i can get the system prefs to see hen i press F13 but not the ones above that.

does it require some 3rd party software?

What kind of Mac do you have? On my iMac G5, F14/15 control the brightness of the screen. I'm not sure about F16 or if you could install something to change these settings.
