How do i work out which external monitors are ‘retina capable’?

Currently have a 2016 13 inch MacBook Pro, base non rouge bar. Shopping for external monitor, Ultrawide preferably.

Currently looking at Dell UltraSharp U3818DW 37.5" which is 3840x1600 resolution.

I’m not sure if my MacBook would scale properly so things don’t appear too small. (can connect using usb c or dp). Is there a way/process I can figure that out?

Don't worry. In the Displays preference pane you can adjust the resolution to make things bigger if need be.
