I have been getting so many beachballs and hangs lately that I decided to run iDefrag (coriolis) on my MBP HD it to see if it would speed it up. However it could not complete due to bad blocks. So I did the following tests but I'm not sure which to believe :

- Disk utility verify
says drive ok.

says DRIVE FAILING replace drive
power on hours 9496
pending bad sectors 10
reallocated bad sectors 14
total errors 7460
last error type = uncorrectable
last error time = 9496

says drive ok

Any ideas?

Answer :

Just went to the apple store. The drive is dying SmartUtility is right. All apples standard tests passed then they did the in depth HD test and 10 seconds in a big red FAIL appeared.

Moral of the story is use this utility to check a potentially dying HD :

Both apples disk util and smart reporter were wrong.
