I was on the Apple website looking at the Iphone 17 colors. This is not a black phone, absolutely not. Its a Grey phone with a small amount of black in the camera section. I wish they would release a phone that actually is black.

I assume you are being sarcastic as I looked up the 16 Pro in black on the apple website and its grey also lol.
On a 2nd look... Both are black actually. That render photo does not do iPhone 17 justice I thought it was lighter shade, but it appears to be the same. Rails/sides are completely black, back is lighter shade with camera island and Apple logo being pitch black. That's as close to black as you're gonna get without doing like jet black / glossy.
Sides of the phone blend perfectly with bezels as it is to make it immersive, I don't think it needs to be any more black.

I don't know, I will get to see it next weekend in person so we shall see.

It is black, it's just matte and lit up with flashes. Black is subjective especially in photos.
The pic I posted is from the Apple website, I guess I’ll have to see it in person.

I got into an argument with another MR member when the Space Gray iPhone 5s launched. They were INSISTENT that the phone was black, while I was trying to point out that while gray is a shade of black, it's not actually black.

The argument ended when another member pointed out that the Space Gray iPhone 5s was black in the same way that black tires make your car black.

Nice to know this issue isn't dead, LOL!

The important thing for me, with a black iPhone, is that you get a seamless blend between screen and the surrounding metal. The images on the apple website have me slightly concerned that this won't be the case this year.

As is arguing whether NOT jet black is actually black or instead gray.

What is your point?
That their Jet black, has never really been jet black. How is this news? I think they have had some polished finishes in the past that have been close. Why did anyone assume this "black" was going to be black, when apple is really never black, in the way that most people define black. Grey is the new black.

IDK. If I could explain why people seem to think gray is actually 100 percent black, I could end this argument once and for all.

If you can see the grey edges on the face of this iPhone, I might just go for white this year.

Isn’t the actual coloring (dye or vinyl or whatever) on the inside part of the glass? If so, it’s probably as black as they can get it with the frosted glass, which diffuses the color. The area around the camera is not frosted so probably showing the true color that’s behind the frosted area.

Either way, whatever…they’ve had about 600 shades of “space grey” so far.

I received my 'black' iPhone 17 yesterday. Side by side, it's clearly much lighter than my black iPhone 16. I would put it close to the colour of my Space Grey M2 Macbook Air.

It looks pretty good, although I prefer a deeper black.
