I've been a Mac user for about 10 years now and I'm completely bought into the Mac ecosystem. I have a recent MacBook Pro with 256GB internal storage and I'm bumping against capacity. I got a new iPhone 11 Pro this weekend and I couldn't backup my old phone to my desktop because there wasn't enough space. I have about 100GB in photos and music and I'm looking for the best solution to unload the media off the MacBook Pro.

I do fully leverage iCloud but I'm paranoid about losing my data so I'd like to have copies.

I have an unRAID server at my home with about 30TB of storage capacity. I would love to utilize this for storage and I've been trying but running into some issues. I've already made duplicates of all my personal media on the unRAID server for backup purposes. My wireless network is fairly ideal (Eero unit directly connected, I get about 300-400MB to my server wirelessly) however I find that iTunes and iPhoto are unbearably slow when trying to maintain them over the network.

I have tried moving all my music over to my server including the iTunes file and similar with iPhoto. Is there a better way to do this? I assume using a portable USB drive would be much faster but I don't love having to attach a USB drive every time I open either program. Plus the extra step of syncing the USB drive with my backups on my server.
